When we cook we normally stick to dinner foods, our first time trying a dessert just happened to be for our wedding cake. We had a bunch of ideas months ahead of time and when it came down to it nothing happened the way it was supposed to luckily it was better thanks to the help from some of our family. We had the cupcake portion of the cake down after a few runs to the local market and improvises.
The Next step was the top tier which was an actual cake. Going with our flower and color theme we decided to keep it slightly simple. The actual cake was a two layer marble fudge with mocha buttercream filling made by Andrew, The outside white fondant which we topped with a nest of brown home made buttercream and roasted coconut, we added cross hatch with a pizza cutter, fondant roses and the final touch, blue sugar pearls, and after six hours our wedding cake was finally complete!
Aside from the stress, the chaos, and yes, the shed tears, we are very happy that we decided to make our own wedding cake, it was something that not only brought us closer to eachother and our family involved in the construction of the "beast", but it was something that we could be proud of, and that everyone enjoyed.
I highly recommend anyone planning a wedding on a budget to make their own cake, it is an easy way to save hundreds of dollars, and get closer to the ones that you love.
Ingredients: Flower and Leaf cake cutters, Amy's home made buttercream, fondant, food coloring, coconut, sugar pearls, and lots of help from Amy (The red headed crafter) and Joni :)
